AWGU LOCAL GOV'T IN FOCUS- Review of the inauguration of the AWGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMUNITY POLICING COMMITTEE!

On the 26th of June 2020.

A special Committee called AWGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMUNITY POLICING COMMITTEE was set up and inaugurated by the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Pedro OKWUDILI NWANKWO "EZE OME-OGO".

The Committee comprises of all the critical stakeholders/representatives from different groups/institutions: The Traditional Rulers, the Clergies, hunters, farmers, market Leaders, student Union, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Youths, Health workers, vigilante, etc.

Before the inauguration, the Divisional Police Officer, Agbogugu Division SP John Igele, briefed the members of the committee on what is expected of them. In his words, "... As the Executive Chairman have said, this is about Community security, the idea was completely the idea of the inspector General of police. In Enugu State we have the vigilante- The Neighbourhood Watch Group.

At the Federal level, the inspector General of police want (the country) to have special constaburaries.

In the 1960's there used to be special constaburaries. These constaburaries are embedded in their various Communities.

They are not rewarded, but they wear uniforms (the police uniforms.)

The aim of the formation of the committee is to select special constaburaries as directed by the Inspector General of Police.

By the time the authority gives us the signal that they should commence their work, we will equally communicate the Executive Chairman who will now mobilize for recruitment of these special constaburaries in their various Communities (through this Committee)

In all the Communities, there will be representatives of this Committee that will be recruited, they will be kitted fully.

They can be given various ranks, they can be SPs depending on their qualifications, they can be Inspectors, constables, corporals, it is important to note that it is not remunerationary, it is humanitarian work, they are not going to be paid salaries.

These people are going to be the security of the Federal Government (working together with the police and the Community.)

I pray as time goes on, they will be remunerated and they will be paid for their job. If it is done, they will be motivated to do the job.

It is expected that if there is security challenge, for instance at AGBOGUGU, these special constaburaries will be communicated for security assistance and we the DPOs will at intervals call them for briefing and for special intelligence, training and information."

While addressing the question from the representative of the artisan group in Awgu Local Gov't, Mr Okoh Livinus, who asked if they would be paid, the DPO Awgu Division, Ijebuonwu Emmanuel (SP), made it clear that it is a voluntary service aimed to support the efforts of the security operatives in the Communities and to give our communities 💯% security assurance.

Before the inauguration, the Executive Chairman, Hon. PEDRO OKWUDILI NWANKWO "EZE OME-OGO" highlighted the job of the committee which he stated as *"The job of this Committee- LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMUNITY POLICING COMMITTEE- is to select the special constaburaries, to oversee the challenges the constaburaries would have and quickly address them and to ensure that the security of lives and properties in the Communities are guaranteed.

All the Communities must be represented. We all know the characters of every individual in our various Communities. Our job is to select people with unquestionable characters. Maybe 2,3,4 representatives from every Community as the case may be.

It has nothing to do with PCRC. What we are doing today is a directive from Enugu State Government, maybe the state may have gotten signal from the Federal. We thank His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyị Ugwuanyị for his 101% interest in the security and welfare of the people of Enugu State.

...By the time we go back, working together with you people, we will have a peaceful environment and the security of our environment will be guaranteed. Thank you very much. I congratulate you for being part of this special Committee..."

The Youth Leader Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Leo Ikechukwu Egbu in his remarks thanked the Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Pedro Okwudili Nwankwo, for finding him worthy to be a member of the committee.

*"Community Policing no doubt is going to help to curtail some of the social vices we are having in the Communities and I'm very proud of the opportunity given to me by the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Pedro OKWUDILI NWANKWO "EZE OME-OGO" to serve in the committee."*

He pledged loyalty to the Chairman on behalf of the youths of Awgu Local Gov't Area in making sure that Community Policing/security of lives and properties is of utmost interest of the youths. He assured the Chairman that he will give all the necessary data and Information to ensure that youths are being carried along in the service.

At the inauguration were: 

The DPO Awgu Division SP Ijebuonwu Emmanuel;

DPO Agbogugu Division, SP John Igele;

DPO Owelli Court Division, SP Adepoju Lucas;

The Area Commander NDLEA Awgu Area Command (Nkanu East and West, Aninri Awgu, Ishaku Illya (JP).

The CSO Awgu Neighbourhood Watch Group, Sunday Chukwu and Chief Security Officers of the Government.
